Every Music Company is Morphing into the Same Thing Record labels are becoming streaming services; talent management companies are becoming record labels; distributors are having a go at becoming managers. And artists are stuck in the middle. https://www.rollingstone.com/music/music-features/every-music-company-is-morphing-into-the-same-thing-811329/

How This Artist Grew To 500,000 Monthly Spotify Listeners Without Playlists Three years ago the northern Virginia conscious hip hop artist Lucidious was struggling to get listeners to his music. He had about 150 monthly listeners on Spotify (no I didn’t forget a zero) with merely 45 followers, about 1,500 followers on Instagram and Facebook. And was making less than $100 a month from his music. Fast forward to today, three years later, he now has 500,000 monthly listeners on Spotify (no my finger didn’t get stuck on the zero key), over 50,000 followers on Spotify, 245,000 Likes on Facebook, 100,000 followers on Instagram, he’s getting around 5 million streams a month, has over 100 million total streams across all platforms and is making around $20,000 a month just from his recorded music. https://aristake.com/post/500000-spotify-listeners

How to Sing A Happy Tune At Tax Time April 15 doesn’t have to be a nightmare. Though most Americans dread the circled date for tax day on their calendar, we’re here to tell you that if you play your cards right you can actually make the system work for you. No, really. Creating music has unique tax implications, both from how to pay on what you earn, to what you can deduct. https://www.royaltyexchange.com/blog/how-to-sing-a-happy-tune-at-tax-time

Apple And Spotify Are Dueling Over How Much To Pay Songwriters Music streaming has always been a cutthroat market, with the leading companies not having many positive things to say about one another. But things became particularly heated this week when a small tweak to U.S. copyright rules — which actually happened a whole year ago and is resurfacing now because of a new development — set off a chain of public accusations among streaming companies, songwriters and music business associations. It’s a complicated matter that centers around a densely formatted 119-page court document, so here’s a simplified rundown of the ruckus. https://www.rollingstone.com/music/music-news/apple-spotify-pay-songwriters-808790/

Don't Let Smart Speakers Control Your Music Ever since Amazon announced their smart speaker, Echo, at the end of 2014, this niche industry as quickly climbed. Other companies started releasing their own smart speakers and, now, most of your music-loving, middle-to-upper-class friends probably have one sitting next to their vinyl record player. This is good. It made it easier for music fans to listen to any song they wanted with a quick vocal command. But it’s also affected the music makers. Here's how and what you should know about smart speakers as an artist. http://blog.sonicbids.com/dont-let-smart-speakers-control-your-music

13 Google Ads Campaign Types (And What to Expect From Them) Google Ads is arguably one of the most misunderstood platforms for paid advertising. Many business owners promote their wares with sponsored posts on social media sites like Facebook, but underutilize Google Ads, despite the unique opportunity it offers to advertise their products and services directly to people actively searching for them. Google puts a large breadth of advertising tools at your fingertips. It also gives you access to users of the world’s two largest search engines—Google and YouTube, respectively—and a network of millions of websites to advertise on. https://www.shopify.com/blog/google-ads-types

This Clever Hack Will Change the Way You Find Music on Spotify My favorite thing about Spotify has always been music discovery. So when the company started building personalized playlists like Discovery Weekly and Release radar, I was hooked. The only problem was listening to all the new music takes forever. But an independent project from a couple of Spotify developers offers an amazing hack for exploring millions and millions of songs. They call it Discover Quickly. https://gizmodo.com/this-clever-hack-will-change-the-way-you-find-music-on-1833433404

Slave To The 'Rithm? Not So Fast: Everything You Need To Know About The Deal Between Endel and Warner Music You may have seen the clickbait headlines swirling around over the past few days that Warner Music Group has “signed an algorithm to a record deal.” Understandably, this has triggered many people’s worst fears about automation’s potential impact on the music industry and on artists’ careers (e.g. “the end is nigh”). There’s also been a lot of tongue-in-cheek speculation about how a major-label algorithm would be treated under contract. Music Ally’s Stuart Dredge joked that he hopes the algorithm “doesn’t go sentient and end up complaining in the media about per-stream rates https://www.getrevue.co/profile/cheriehu42/issues/slave-to-the-rithm-not-so-fast-everything-you-need-to-know-about-the-deal-between-endel-and-warner-music-168092

Meet the 12-Year-Old With the Six-Figure Record Deal He was eight when he got his first smartphone: an iPhone 5c in beaming lime green. He was 10 when his impromptu breakdance at a high school basketball game in Florida went viral. Now, at the grand old age of 12, Seth Vangeldren finds himself juggling marketing contracts in six-figure territory with some of the world’s biggest record labels — who are all clamoring to get him to help break their newest artists. https://www.rollingstone.com/music/music-features/seth-vangeldren-dancer-triller-810802/

Vinyl Rakes in More Revenue for the British Music Industry Than YouTube YouTube continues to pay less than most other streaming platforms, according to the BPI (along with every other music industry trade body).  But that’s not the only category that’s beating YouTube. The numbers keep saying the same thing. According to a full-year 2018 report from the Entertainment Retailers Association (ERA), paid streaming revenue overtook physical and download revenue for the first time in the UK.
