LeVar Burton Launches Kickstarter Campaign to Revive ‘Reading Rainbow

Burton's heartfelt reaction upon learning his Kickstarter goal was reached is captured on tape
LeVar Burton cried tears of joy on Wednesday night when his Kickstarter campaign to bring back “Reading Rainbow” met its fundraising goal and beyond.
A cameraman was on hand to record Burton's reaction at the very moment he reached his $1 million dollar target. His friends cheered and he breathed a sigh of relief when the numbers finally came in.
Burton addressed his supporters with a heartfelt thank you. “So Kickstarters, I don't know what to say, we've just crossed the million dollar threshold,” Burton said.
“It is our first day. I am overwhelmed, thank you so much, this is going to enable us to really really really do a lot of good. I am so proud that this community has come together to support this effort and it's a people's thing, it's the $5, it's the $10, it's the $25, its the $1 pledges, it's unbelievable, or actually it's actually very believable, thank you so much, we are literally changing the world one children's book at a time. God bless.”

Elio Motors and the Three Wheeled Car for $7,000 - A Moonshot Project

Elio Motors and the Three Wheeled Car - A Moonshot Project
By Tom Spendlove

Paul Elio wanted to bring affordable transportation to drivers and create jobs for American workers. The company is planning to release vehicles for sale in the first quarter of 2015. The car is planned to use 95% American parts and American labor, vitally important to Paul.

The company says that the vehicle will cost $6800, achieve an 84 miles per gallon fuel economy, and they anticipate a five star NHTSA safety rating. The eight gallon tank will theoretically allow a driver to go 672 miles on a tank of gas. Top speed of the Elio is said to be over 100 miles per hour. Vehicles will be built in the abandoned Shreveport Louisiana assembly plant.

Elio will sell the vehicles themselves at specialized retail centers in the top sixty markets across the United States. Eight different colors are all hip, now and named things like Licorice, Sour Apple and Rocket Silver. Elios come with standard equipment - a reinforced roll cage and airbags for safety, radio, air conditioning and power windows for comfort. Most of the components of the Elio are already in production, allowing the vehicle to keep a low cost and hopefully low insurance premiums.

Because most of the components can be purchased at a corner auto parts store the carmaker is expecting low maintenance costs. The small front mounted engine in the Elio is 70 horsepower, 1.0 litre, three cylinder device that resembles a Geo Metro more than a standard Chevrolet or Ford offering. Two seats are available in tandem configuration, or the driver can go solo and stow gear on the fold-down second seat. The Elio is incredible because of its massive ambition. It's hard to think of another automaker starting out like this on such a large scale with such a radical product.

Massive marketing campaigns aren't hitting venues like the Superbowl but the vehicle was featured last month at the Consumer Electronics Show, the Barrett-Jackson Collector Car Auction, and the Sundance Film Festival. Even with heavy funding in place, a location secured to build the product, and suppliers on board for production there is a heavy question in the air of whether or not the Elio can become a fully realized product.

Obtaining a five star crash rating will go a long way toward winning consumer confidence and once production begins it will be exciting to see how popular the vehicle is with American consumers.

Karen Andrea Parker - Using Sports to pay for a quality education

APEX / HOLLY SPRINGS NC (IFS) - -A Winning Transition Plan
Helping high school athletes navigate the college recruitment process requires some extra steps. Make sure you’re on top of eligibility requirements and parental expectations.  For a brief on real student athletes and counselors and dads, drop Ms. Parker an email:

From Focus at Linked In:

Beginning in high school student athletes spend the bulk of their free time preparing for competition and ultimately competing in their chosen sport. The necessary time devoted to athletics does not provide student athletes, from all educational sectors, time to plan for the life transitions they will face.

As a result, upon completion of a student athlete’s career, at any level, transitions are apparent and unclear. Student athletes who have not developed a clear transition plan, in preparation for when they complete sports, are more likely to face adversity in several areas such as employment, graduation, social adjustments, and identity. Consequently, how do student athletes adequately prepare for the upcoming transitions?

Whose responsibility is it to assist these student athletes during their transitions? And how do student athletes access the necessary resources for a successful transition?

On Focus aims to provide student athletes with the transitional support services needed in conjunction with the lessons they have learned from athletic participation.

The vision of the On Focus organization is to effectively deliver the five core principles of transition through the three main support services, which include (1) Workshops, (2) Client Services Number, and (3) Personal Document Services.

The overarching goal for the future of the organization is to provide these three main services to a minimum of 80% of student athletes at the high school, community college, and four-year college level in order to prepare these student athletes for the many transitional phases of their lives.

These transitional phases are tied directly to the five core principles of transition that fuel the On Focus support services, and include Educational, Support, Planning, Exit, and Progress Transitions. . .
